Transcription Jobs: Are They Worth Your Time?

My experience trying to make a few extra bucks on transcription sites like TranscribeMe and QA World

If you’re like most people and are bored during quarantine, you may be looking for a quick way to make money online. Like me, you may have even considered transcribing. When I first stumbled across a few transcription sites a few weeks ago, I thought that I had reached the jackpot. A quick and easy way to make money? Sign me up!

But after transcribing for a few days, I’ve realized that this is definitely NOT an easy nor quick way to make money.

TranscribeMe

A transcriptionist at TranscribeMe makes about $15–22/audio hour, or $0.25–0.37/audio minute.

The average monthly earnings working at this site are $250. I thought this was reasonable and, considering transcribing is a very flexible job, I decided to give it a try.

TranscribeMe had the longest, most unnecessarily time-consuming entrance exam ever. This exam consisted of:

  1. A short three question multiple choice quiz
  2. Three 4-minute audio files to transcribe and
  3. A 10 question quiz with a combination of multiple choice, true or false, and “type…
